About the piece:
A man stands in a dark room, lit by a single source of light. An actor. He talks about himself and about this event which we call "theater" and which is subject to so many rules and rituals. He talks about it like a researcher from another time, dissecting the performance in its creation. For what is this "theater" and what is it used for? Why do the actors pretend they are someone else, why do we as an audience (with Clancy: "the strangers") watch the whole thing reverently in silence, and who is actually holding the strings?
With »Event« the American playwright and director John Clancy has created a comical and at the same time deeply irritating monologue about the mechanisms of theater. A clever piece about appearance and truth, about the question of what theater can tell about life; and a text that is able to dupe us viewers - who we think we know the ways and means of theater - time and again. In-house director David Ortmann In his VR staging, Clancy's multi-layered monologue is expanded to include additional (digital) levels and a 360-degree view that simultaneously reveals and conceals. Because how do theater mechanisms work in digital space? And who actually sees and listens? At the interface between theater and film aesthetics, we discover new possibilities of expression.
